Do I need to collect sales tax — and what's the $0.50 charge?

Whether you should register to collect sales tax depends on where and how much you sell — and we're not tax professionals, so we can't advise you on that. Please talk to a qualified tax advisor about your situation.

What we can tell you is how Uberflux and Stripe behave:

  • If you register to collect tax (you do this in your Stripe settings), Stripe automatically calculates the right tax at checkout, collects it from the buyer, and charges $0.50 per transaction for each sale it calculates tax on. This fee is billed by Stripe, not Uberflux.
  • If you don't register anywhere, no tax is calculated, nothing extra is collected from buyers, and there's no $0.50 charge.

You're the merchant of record for your sales, so registering, collecting, and remitting sales tax is your responsibility. Uberflux simply passes Stripe's calculation through at checkout when you've turned it on.

How are payments processed on Uberflux?

We use Stripe as our payment partner to help ensure a properly secured payment process for both you and your customers. To sell on Uberflux, you need a Stripe account — it's quick and easy to sign up. Once you have an approved maker account, head to the payments page to connect your Stripe integration. You can sign up for Stripe right there if you don't already have an account, or link an existing one.

What does Uberflux charge?

A flat 4.5% platform fee per sale — no listing fees, no monthly subscription. On top of that, Stripe's standard payment processing (2.9% + $0.30 in the US) is billed by Stripe, not Uberflux.

How do I get paid?

Buyers pay through your own connected Stripe account, and Stripe pays out to your bank on its normal schedule. Uberflux never holds your money.

Can I deliver my badges in person at a conference?

Yes. Offer drops instead of shipping and customers can pick the event at checkout. The buyer gets a QR code in their receipt; you scan it at the drop to fulfill the order on the spot.

How do I issue a refund?

Refunds are issued from your Stripe dashboard — find the charge there and refund it, in full or in part. Uberflux picks up the refund automatically and mirrors it onto the order: a full refund on an order that hasn't been handed off yet cancels it, and for drops that means it becomes unfulfillable if scanned at pickup. If the goods were already shipped or picked up, the order keeps its status but is marked as refunded instead. A partial refund is just flagged — it never cancels the order.

What happens if there's a chargeback?

If a buyer disputes a charge with their bank, we mark the order as a chargeback. If it hasn't been handed off yet, it's automatically cancelled — for drops, the order becomes unfulfillable when scanned at pickup, and for shipments, it won't go out. If you'd already shipped it or it was already picked up before the dispute came in, the order is left alone and you'll need to respond to it from your Stripe dashboard.

Do my listings need approval?

No. There's no listing pre-approval — connect your Stripe account, create your listing, and it's live.
